Edinburgh is a venerable institution, founded in the 1580s, and has forged a special position in academia. Its national and international reputation is excellent, and it has a large, diverse and multinational student body. Edinburgh itself is vibrant and cosmopolitan, with stately architecture and green spaces. University buildings are spread throughout the city. Many of them are historic, but the university continues to develop with buildings such as the award-winning Informatics Forum.
Almost two-thirds of the work submitted for the latest research assessment exercise (2008) was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent, the highest proportion in Scotland. The university’s entry was among the largest in the UK and produced strong results across the board.
Edinburgh is often recognised as one of the prettiest cities in the UK, and as such is popular all year round with visitors from all over the world. In August things get particularly lively with the Edinburgh Festival launching into full swing. Artists and performers from across the globe perform for the public in venues across the city. Indeed, the Edinburgh festival has been the launch pad for some of the most famous stars of stage and screen today. The business school in Buccleuch Place is located at the heart of the university campus. The state-of-the-art building houses all school staff, features eight lecture theatres, multiple syndicate rooms, an education suite, cafe, and spaces for students and staff.
